Charlie Wilmoth

I'm Charlie Wilmoth, and I'm a composer of jagged textures, jarring juxtapositions, and repeated figures that sound sort of like something you've heard before. The repetition in my music  comes in part from American Minimalism, but it is not particularly consonant and is not intended to be soothing. John Adams wrote A Short Ride in a Fast Machine; my music can be very machine-like, but it's not a sleek, purring "fast machine," but rather a broken machine with a sputtering engine, or a toy robot that bounces into walls.

I teach theory, composition and aural skills at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, and I run Otterbein's new music ensemble, Red Noise. I have studied with Roger Reynolds, Neely Bruce and Anthony Braxton, completing my schooling at the University of California, San Diego in 2010. Recently, I've written for Bearthoven and Patchwork. I sing and play guitar in the rock band Fox Japan and played viola in the art-country cover band GO Duo.

've written about music for the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Columbus Other Paper, and Dusted Magazine. I'm currently working on a book about songwriting and music theory.
